Biblion website was conceived as a natural (albeit virtual) extension
of the shop. Many dealers who displayed within the shop asked
if a web site could be created to enable them to list their entire
stock holding. The first incarnation of the site was made for that sole purpose towards
the end of 1999. However, it quickly became obvious that a great number
of other sellers were very keen to list their books on the site, so at
the start of 2000 the first version of the Biblion.co.uk and Biblion.com multi-dealer
database was launched. This online community was initially open only to the UK trade,
but again, so many requests to join came from overseas dealers that the
decision to go "international" was made.
Most recently Biblion.co.uk has partnered with Biblio.com,
one of the world's largest marketplaces for used, rare, and out-of-print books,
by announcing their mutual decision to work together to redevelop the current Biblion Ltd.
online strategy. As in the beginning, the aim
is and will always be to put customers directly in touch
with book dealers and not "mark up" booksellers' prices so that
customers will always
get a fair deal.
